Storyline:     

Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach's comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange... he is a prisoner of his own imagination - the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it's suddenly up to Stine, Zach, Hannah, and Zach's friend Champ (Ryan Lee) to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

I remember when I was young the Goosebumps TV show, but I was never got into it, or the books they are based on past the the point of just knowing who R.L. Stine is.

It's a perfect treat for Halloween as a group of children accidentally unleash the monsters from Stine's mind, by unlocking the books they were written into.

It's a fantastic adventure as Stine and this group of kids attempt to put his monsters back into the books.

It's a fun story even if you are not aware of Goosebumps, but I'm sure if you are a huge fan, you'll get a real kick out of seeing some of the monsters from your favorite book make an appearance on the big screen.

It's not just a fun film as some of the monsters were real creepy. Like the Gnome army, the giant prey mantis and especially a ventriloquist "puppet" voiced by Jack Black (who also plays a fictional version of Stine).

It's a great time at the movies.

First Saving Private Ryan, then Interstellar, and now The Martian. Matt Damon's the one to find. The go to guy. The one worthy of being found thrice over. Damon is Watney, a man stranded on Mars after his crew believe him dead. This film is about his survival. Suspension of disbelief is steady and highly believable, to the point of utter astonishment. It's incredible how Watney's time spent on Mars feels so real. No one has landed on Mars before, and no one probably will in our lifetime. Ridley Scott and the team behind The Martian have kept the physics clean. Watney painfully produces food and water for the long haul. Damon is mesmerising. Open spaces and long/wide angle shots create a feeling of solitude. He's supported by the likes of Sean Bean and Chiwetel Ejiofor, but when the screen's off Damon, it needs to be. We need to know how and what he's doing. Visually stunning effects add a balance of beauty and ambiance. The contrast is definitely felt between Watney on Mars, his crew on their ship back home and the NASA workers on Earth. The Martian is a gripping blockbuster, even if it's a wee bit predictable.

 The visual effects and dinosaurs were amazing, but the plot was the same boring career woman finds love and realizes she actually wants kids. There's also a scene where the male love interest sexually harasses the female lead for five minutes that was played like the audience was supposed to find it charming? Some really obvious instances of sexism too like where one woman tells another it's "when not if" she will have kids and where two boys are more impressed with a man reversing a jeep than a woman taking out a dinosaur. They could have made it way better by just having the point be that the woman realizes the importance of family like they did for the two brothers. It would have tied in much better with the rest of the movie.

John Erick Dowdle's "No Escape" is a taut thriller, nicely edited and strongly paced, resulting in a film that knows exactly how to get your adrenaline up and your movie-going senses tingled. Dowdle has been a strong force in the horror genre ever since his seldom-seen, largely unreleased debut "The Poughkeepsie Tapes" came onto the scene in 2007. Since then, Dowdle has proved his ability to direct claustrophobic thrillers such as "As Above, So Below" and "Devil," solidifying his filmography as dynamic and rounded, especially for a horror/thriller director.

"No Escape" is his most mainstream project to date, with a bigger scale than his previous films and bigger stars as well. Set in Southeast Asia, we focus on Jack (Owen Wilson), his wife Annie (Lake Bell), and their children Lucy and Breeze (Sterling Jerins and Claire Geare), who are moving to Asia for Jack's new job. Not long after being in the land, Jack's morning walk to get a newspaper results in him racing back to his hotel, following an all-out war between law enforcement and natives in the cluttered streets. Riots, looting, and inexplicable violence break out in the streets and Jack and his family must find a way to Vietnam where they can declare asylum. They seek out the help of Hammond (Pierce Brosnan, who provides darkly comic relief in many scenes), a skilled survivalist who is seen traveling on the plane with them to Asia, who assists in finding them temporary places to stay amidst all the madness.

Assertions have flown over the alleged "racism" of "No Escape"'s story, due to the negative portrayal of Asian natives and the constant danger and sanctity of this white family being challenged, in addition to being the prime concern, throughout the course of this picture. I bring this up not to challenge the position, for it is somewhat valid, but how come films like "Taken," which is operating on the same playing field as this film, isn't as slammed as this film is? Was that picture just too entertaining for the subtext to be noticed, or were we too distracted by Liam Neeson in that film to really care? 

"No Escape," however, can claim more than "Taken" can as film because "No Escape"'s strengths come in the regard of its editing and camera-work, two things I was worried about walking into this film. Chaotic action films like these are ripe for sloppy aesthetics, which can, in turn, ruin any ability to see the action, let alone really care about what is happening to the characters. Dowdle and editor Elliot Greenberg are smart about how they shoot and edit this film, never settling for anything other than shots and editing tactics that allow for immersion and clear placement for the audience. In addition, Greenberg's editing provides some elements of structural pacing, which work to "No Escape"'s favor, especially during the more chaotic scenes.

The only element that subtracts from what "No Escape" does so uniformly well with its aesthetics is the convenience of the plot. Throughout the film, characters are put in compromising positions, including one scene at the end that comes so close to making this film great and almost entirely amoral, but finds ways through miraculous scenarios to get them out of harm's way in the nick of time. This ostensibly comes from writers John Erick and Drew Dowdle's dueling desire to up the film's stakes but simultaneously back down and not make things too drastic. For as heartless as some scenes of the film can be, it would've only been fitting to see some of the more serious, morally corrupt scenarios to follow through.

"No Escape" still works as a basic, fulfilling film; a pulsating action film with various elements of a thriller directed by someone with an evident list of ideas and edited by someone who understands the value of pacing and crystal-clear editing.

 This is another unapologetically religious movie from the Kendrick brothers. The budget has obviously gotten bigger and the acting is superb. Here is why I think you should go, whether you are the least bit religious or not. H.O.P.E. In this time of uncertainty and strife, this movie offers a burst of hope that maybe we are not fighting our personal battles alone. We all know THAT person in our lives who takes prayer very seriously. Even the most die-hard atheist will often find himself at the doorstep of THAT person when life seems desperate because the prayers they offer up just might make a difference. This movie takes the prayer room of the faithful and likens it to a combat "war room". How incredibly appropriate. It is heartwarming, funny, poignant, and meaningful. I see healing coming out of this movie. I also predict an increase of jump rope sales, and even some closets getting cleared out. I consider it a must see. Well done.

Me and my kids have enjoyed all of the Marvel films so far, so we went to see Ant Man as soon as we could. Big mistake. I was bored, my kids were bored and kept asking if we could go home. Everything about it is just downer and not what you want from a superhero film. Some of it really isn't appropriate for kids either. 

Everybody in the cinema seemed disappointed, we heard a lot of grumbling as we left (and no, it wasn't just about my kids complaining, they were still pretty quiet).

Wish we'd seen something else and we'll have to be more careful about Marvel films in future.
